[LabUpdates] Laboratory Formulary Committee Updates - Beaker testing changes

Medicine and laboratory testing are constantly changing.  The Laboratory Formulary Committee regularly sends out emails with new updates and changes.



Beaker go-live change in Laboratory orders: Starting June 21st, the laboratory will transition to a new Laboratory Information System (Beaker).  This change will allow significant improvement in testing communication, tracking, and reporting.  Most of the changes will not affect how orders are placed in Epic.  Three changes will affect how some laboratory testing orders are placed:

  1.  Generic orders that have been used to order multiple different tests will be replaced with specific Epic orders.  This will avoid confusion on exactly what testing is being requested.  Please see the attached guidance "ALL PROV Beaker Retiring & New AP Orders" to review which orders are affected and which replacement orders will be active.  Any provider with these orders on their Preference List Orders will need to update their preference list.  The attached tipsheet "ip_add_edit_preference_lists_orders" explains how to make these updates.
  2.  Samples submitted to the laboratory require a sample type (what is being submitted) and source (where did it come from).  The list of types and sources have been revised and vetted to ensure the lists of both are as inclusive as possible while also being useful.   3.  There is an option built into most laboratory tests to allow testing to be added on to a previously collected specimen.  This option will only be available if the system sees an appropriate sample that was previously collected.  Please see the tipsheet "Provider - Beaker Implementation SUB" for more details.
